The twelfth hole is a classic birdie or double bogey hole, perhaps the best at Highland. From the elevated tee, you have a memorable view of the wooded hillsides of western Pennsylvania, punctuated by the white splash of the bunkers. The tee shot plays severely downhill, looks wide and encourages the big hitter to let the big dog out, because if you get it to a slope 240 yards from the tee, the ball will run like the devil. In addition to the two fairway bunkers on the left, anything struck to the right of the fairway is destined to bound through a row of trees to the front of the 8th tee. If you hit the fairway, you are presented with the classic risk/reward shot. Even the lay-up shot is not a foregone conclusion, as the right side of the fairway slopes dramatically, allowing your ball to bounce gaily into the heavy rough. Even with a sand wedge in your hand, the green is not easy to hold, as it slopes gently away from the golfer. The green is not severely contoured, but does have several subtle breaks.
